Losing 3 Pounds For Charity

The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) is challenging Canadians to lose three pounds this month.

The CDA's 3-Pound Challenge encourages Canadians to go into their closets and donate three pounds of clothing.

CDA Ontario Regional Manager William Blain says the campaign is a new and simple way for Canadians to donate.

"People were looking for something fun, something convenient, something easy, and that brought us to the 3-Pound Challenge," says Blain. "Three pounds is fairly easy to acquire, and to make it a little more fun, you're able to lose three pounds the easiest way you would be able to."

The donated clothes are sold, and Blain says all funds are given back to the Canadian Diabetes Association. The donations directly benefit anyone with diabetes through research, education, and camping programs for youth with type 1 diabetes.

"We are in desperate need. Right now, diabetes costs the Canadian healthcare system approximately $14-billion a year," says Blain. "More than 10-million Canadians have diabetes and they are estimating by 2025, 13-million. So, it's of epidemic proportion right now."

Anyone who would like to donate can bring their gently used clothing to the drop boxes or any Value Village location. Drop box locations can be found online HERE or through the CDA's mobile app.

The campaign runs until July 31, 2015.
