Bear Spray, Wrench Used As Weapons In Brawl

Two people are facing weapons charges after police were called to a St. Thomas brawl where two people were attacked with bear spray.

Investigators say officers were called to the St. Thomas Sportsman Club around 2am Monday morning for a report of a "large gathering" and disturbance.

Police found two people had been sprayed with bear spray and say a 1 1/8 pipe wrench was also used as a weapon.

It is alleged this brawl stemmed from an incident earlier in the year and the participants had been building it up on Facebook, leading to the early morning gathering.

A 19-year-old Southwold man faces four counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He remains in custody for a bail hearing.

A 20-year-old St. Thomas woman faces one charge of possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. She has been released with conditions.

Their names have not been released. Police say victims in the brawl suffered minor injuries.

While bear spray is allowed in Canada to protect yourself from animals, police warn that it is against the law to use it against a human and it will result in criminal charges.
