Lower Food Bank Donations A Math Problem

Donations to the London Cares Curbside Food Drive are down compared to last year at this time, but Food Bank Co-Director Glen Pearson says that's because of math, not generosity.

Pearson tells Blackburn News that they've now picked up about 34,700 lbs of food as of Thursday night, compared to about 42,000 lbs at this time in 2014.

However, he says this is due to scheduling. The larger zones are at the tail end of the collection cycle this year.

On Thursday afternoon alone,  Pearson announced the food bank had collected 10,700lbs of food from the curb side, Tim Hortons and grocery stores. This is the largest one-day collection to date.

On Friday, donations will be picked up in Zone B, which encompasses the Cherryhill, Masonville, Stoneybrook Acres, Whitehills and Sherwood Forest neighbourhoods.

Pearson also says people are moving more toward donating at grocery stores than at the curb. He says some Londoners have mistakenly thought their donation was being stolen when it was picked up by a volunteer, and they've taken to social media to discourage others.

The Food Bank welcome donations at grocery stores and its location on Leathorne St. The Curbside Food Drive ends on Friday.
