Construction Firm Fined After Employee Injury

A Komoka-based construction company has been fined $60,000 after one of its workers broke his leg on the job.

On October 22, 2013, employees with Drewlo Construction Limited were working on an apartment building in Burlington.

Three of them were moving a ten foot long piece of metal crown mounding from a swing stage that was attached to a tenth floor balcony. According to the Ministry of Labour, they ran into trouble trying to get the moulding into the apartment because the rooms were full of material and debris.

One of the workers stood on the balcony, while the other held the other end of the moulding in an attempt to move it into the apartment. That worker got his foot stuck in some scrap metal and fell, fracturing his leg.

Drewlo Construction pleaded guilty to failing to abide by Section 35(1) of Ontario's Construction Projects Regulation, which states that waste material and debris shall be removed to a disposal area and reusable material removed to a storage area at least once daily.

In addition to those fines, the court imposed 25% victim fine surcharges as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
