Streets Get Messy During Student Move Out

As students leave town for the summer, city streets are littered with trash.

It's nothing new for city crews as they get ready for extra garbage pick-ups during this time of year.

"When student move outs start around Western University and Fanshawe College, the neighbourhood prepares for the students, their mass exodus and, of course, materials they place out at the curb for garbage and recycling pick up," says Jay Stanford, London's director of environment, fleet and solid waste.

Larger things are often left curbside, which Stanford says is completely acceptable.

"When students do their move outs, we'll see a lot of items like mattresses, couches, tables and other furniture, which are all eligible to place at the curb, unfortunately we just see a lot more of it," says Stanford.

Luckily for residents, if you feel your neighbourhood has too much garbage on the streets the city can help.

"Should there be a need for additional pick up because we hear from residents there's too much garbage or piles getting knocked over, we can definitely give some extra service to help that neighbourhood get back to normal as soon at possible," says Stanford.

Students are encouraged to visit organizations like Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul to donate furniture no longer needed.

Residents who feel their neighbourhood needs an extra clean-up can call 519-661-4570. or e-mail es@london.ca
