Rethink Your Drinking Campaign

Health units across Ontario are asking you to rethink your drinking.

A recent study by Cancer Care Ontario has suggested the use of alcohol increases a person's risk of developing certain types of cancer. A campaign has been launched to increase awareness of the link. The campaign is called, "Rethink Your Drinking."

"Alcohol increases the production of estrogen and increasing estrogen leads to a higher chance of mutation of breast cells and that leads to a higher risk of developing breast cancer," says Debbie Bullas-Rubini of the Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit, who notes a lot of people do not realize they are putting themselves at risk. "A starting point might be keeping a week long diary, just in one week of your life, what do you drink, how often do you drink and do you keep track of what you drink?"

It is recommended women have less than one drink per day, while men are to limit themselves to less than two.

Cancer Care Ontario says in 2010, up to 3,000 cancer cases in the province could be linked to alcohol consumption.
