Outbreak At Victoria Hospital

The London Health Sciences Centre is dealing with an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness.

Four patients on the seventh floor of Victoria Hospital have experienced vomiting and diarrhea.

"They get put in private rooms and have been isolated. When staff deal with them they wear gowns, gloves, masks. We're acutally investigating the cause of the outbreak at the moment. We don't know what's causing it," says LHSC's Director of Infection Prevention and Control Dr. Michael John.

It is suspected the illness is a strain of the norovirus, which has plagued many long-term care homes in the city in the recent months.

"We're a lot luckier than long-term care facilities...We're lucky that we can put people in private rooms and that everyone coming in and out protects thier clothing and themselves," John tells BlackburnNews.com.

There have been no new illnesses today, leading officials to believe the outbreak has already peaked.

Lab results to determine what is causing the vomiting and diarrhea will not be available for at least another day.

Visitors are still welcome on the seventh floor of Victoria Hospital.
