Police Watchdog Reopens Deadly Shooting Investigation

The Special Investigations Unit is revisiting a 2010 police shooting that left a Brantford teen dead after the initial inquest found no wrong doing on the officer's part.

On August 25 of 2010, Brantford Police were called to a Sympatica Cres. home for a domestic dispute.

According to the officers' reports, when Constable Adam Hill arrived he found 18-year-old Evan Jones on the front porch of the home with two large knives. The officer drew his firearm and asked the teen several times to drop the knives. Jones held the blades to his throat and demanded police kill him before heading back inside the house, where his sister and 2-year-old niece were.

Hill entered the home with another officer, while a third entered the back door. Hill says the teen was still carrying the knives and refused to drop them. Jones then charged the two officers with the knives held to his throat. He was pepper sprayed but that did not deter him as he threw one of the knives at the officers.

With a meat cleaver over his head, Jones turned towards where Hill thought the third officer had been. Hill fired his gun at Jones, who was struck by four bullets and killed.

Based on the information known at the time, the SIU determined the officer was not criminally liable for Jones' death.

A statement released by the SIU now says "the decision to reopen the 2010 case comes as a result of materially new information coming to light."

No additional details as to what that information might be have been released.
