Consultations on a pesticide linked to bee deaths begin in London on Tuesday, but an important group won't be taking part.
The Grain Farmers of Ontario has asked its members to not take part in the London forum or the ones in Toronto and Kingston.
CEO Barry Senft argues a public forum does not provide an opportunity for professional and reasonable discussion on the complex issue of pollinator health.
According to a statement, GFO feels its input is far too important to be diluted at urban venues by non-stakeholders.
"We think our message is not going to get through to those holding those consulations in that forum with all the noise around it," says Senft. "We think we're better served, and the members of Grain Farmers of Ontario are better served, focusing on the industry meeting."
Senft says the GFO will participate in one consultation, the one specifically for the agriculture industry which is scheduled for later this month in Guelph.
The pollinator consultation forums were organized by the province after the Wynne government announced a goal of cutting the amount of acreage planted with neonictinoid-treated seeds by 80% by 2017.
The London hearing runs from 1pm until 4pm at the Lamplighter Inn at 591 Wellington Rd. S.
