TVDSB Chair Expects Challenging Term

They vote on a budget of roughly $845-million, and once again, they have chosen Ruth Tisdale to lead them.

Trustees with the Thames Valley District School Board have again turned to Tisdale to act as chair of the board. She was acclaimed earlier this week.

Tisdale says, the good new is, they won't be closing any schools this year.

"We're not forcasting any ARC's (Accomodation Review Committee) this year as the Ministry of Education is looking at reviewing those guidelines around accomodation review," says Tisdale. "But that's something we're going to have to work on as we make amendments and propose changes, and make sure we're getting feedback from the community."

But Tisdale admits there will be challenges during this term, as enrollment continues to drop. She says boards are under pressure from the province to deal with under-capacity schools.

"It's a real balancing act between meeting student needs and recognizing the importance of schools to local communities but also ensuring that we're fiscally responsible," says Tisdale.

This term will also see the introduction of the new health and physical education curriculum, which will include sexual education. It will be the first new sex-ed curriculum introduced since 2010, when the McGuinty government pulled back the proposed curriculum amid protests by some parents and religious groups.

Tisdale says she would have liked to have seen the parental consultation process handled better this time.

"In this case it's also a little difficult because parents have been asked to consult in sort of broad, general areas. Localy, no one has seen the new curriculum. So time will tell when we actually see the document and see what's in there," she says.

Oxford Trustee Bill McKinnon was elected vice-chair of the board.
