City Prepares For Snow

With flurries in the forecast, the City of London is readying its snow removal team.

Officials say 65 snow plows, 25 road salters and sanders, 33 sidewalk plows, and two newly dedicated de-icing machines are ready to hit the streets at a moment's notice.

London has over 3,500 kms of roads, 1,460 kms of sidewalks, 2,100 bus stops and 700 cul-de-sacs.

“Our winter maintenance team is well equipped to monitor and immediately react to adverse conditions on our streets,” says John Parsons, Division Manager of Transportation and Roadside Operations. “Our top priority in any winter weather event is to clear the main streets and bus routes before heading into subdivisions and secondary roads, adhering to provincial and municipal standards.”

Londoners are being asked not to call the city during the first 24 hours of a snow storm. Officials say it usually takes about 6-8 hours to clear priority routes and 24 hours for residential streets to be cleared.

Environment Canada says there is a 60% chance of flurries on Thursday.
