Downtown Darkened By Electrical Fire

An early morning electrical fire left a chunk of downtown London in the dark for roughly eight hours.

Fire crews were called to the area of  York St. and Richmond St. around 4:30am Sunday, after heavy smoke and blue flames were seen shooting up from manholes.

Firefighters quickly identified the cause as a shorted power line or transformer within the sewer system and contacted London Hydro, who switched power off to the downtown core so the blaze could be doused.

As a safety precaution, a nearby apartment building was evacuated. Those residents have since been allowed to return to their homes.

London Hydro spent several hours working to repair damaged wiring before power was fully restored at 12:30pm.
