More Organ Donors Needed

A young girl who lost her life in the crash at a south London Costco was able to save the lives of others.

The family of 6-year-old Addison Hall made the decision to donate her organs, and because of that decision, others will live.

But organ donation advocates says more Londoners should consider adding their names to the province’s organ donation registry.

Trillium Gift of Life Network President Ronnie Gavsie says only 25% of eligible Ontarians have registered.

“A decision to consent to organ donation gives another chance at life to, not just four other people, but four other families,” she says.

In London, the figure is about 33%, but Gavsie says we could do better.

“If we compare to the US, we’re not nearly close. They have a 45% registration rate and are charging ahead toward 50,” says Gavsie.

Gavie says it takes just a few minutes to register. She adds many Ontarians think they are registered because they signed a donor card in the past, but the only way to get on the list is to register at www.beadonor.ca.
