A new study from the Journal of the American Medical Association says more Ontario doctors are registered to be organ donors than other residents.

43% of doctors have registered on www.beadonor.ca or at a Service Canada desk, compared to only 24% of the general population.

The study also found 29.5% of those in the same socioeconomic background as physicians have consented to donate their organs.

The JAMA study is the first to measure the organ donor registration rate among physicians.

London Health Sciences Centre nephrologist Dr. Amit Garg says the ICES Kidney, Dialysis and Tranplantation Research Program commissioned the study.

Dr. Garg says both physicians and the public need to educate themselves and register to donate.
