A Patriotic Call For Blood

Canadian Blood Services hopes a call before the holiday weekend will get Londoners to roll up their sleeves.

The organization says it’s at a five-year low in terms of blood supply. With Canada Day falling on a Tuesday this year, Territory Manager Chris Hardy says they’re┬áseeing more canceled appointments.

“This weekend is going to be a challenge because it is a long weekend with the holiday Tuesday, a lot of people will be off on the Monday,” he says.

Canadian Blood Services is predicting it will need 30,000 appointments a week over the summer to satisfy the demand.

“We’ve seen more people needing blood in the hospitals,” says Hardy. “At the same time we’ve seen a decrease in the number of appointments that are being booked.”

Hardy says the clinic on Wharncliffe Rd. S at Southdale will be open from 9am-1pm on Canada Day.
