Arrest Made In Abduction
London police have made an arrest in connection with the abduction of two young girls and the sexual assault of one of them.
Around 7:30pm on Saturday, May 24, in the area of Southdale Rd. and Adelaide St. S, police say a man in a dark coloured, newer model sedan approached the 9 and 11-year-old girls and convinced them to get in his car.
According to police, he took them to Springbank Park, walked in the area of Storybook Gardens and the park’s wading pool before going back to the car. The man then took the girls to a fast food restaurant near Wellington St. at Commissioners Rd. (around 9:50pm), where he purchased food for them.
They went back to Springbank Park and ate the food, before the man drove them back to the area of Southdale Rd. and Adelaide St. He dropped one of the girls off but took the other to an unknown location, where she was sexually assaulted.
The victim was taken back to Southdale Rd. and Adelaide St. and was dropped her off.
Police announced on Wednesday afternoon, that 44-year-old Dieu V Chau of London has been arrested and charged with two counts of abduction of a person under 14, sexual assault, and sexual interference.
Detective-Inspector Kevin Heslop says the arrest came after tips from the public and strong work by investigators.
“A culmination of all of that information led us on a certain path that ended up with us being on to him and as a result he was arrested,” says Heslop.
Chau is to appear in court Thursday.
Heslop says when it comes time for a bail hearing, police will oppose Chau being released.
“Our primary concern and the Crown’s primary concerns are continuation of offences. Will the person attend court? So there are a number of things that need to be considered in the decision of whether or not they will seek to keep him held in custody,” says Heslop. “Certainly from our position, we have more investigation that needs to be done.”
