EMDC Guards To Return To Court July 8June 10, 2014 12:00pm
Three employees charged in connection with the death of an inmate at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre will return to court next month.
Correctional officers 47-year-old Leslie Lonsbary, 55-year-old Gregory Langford, and 52-year-old supervisor Stephen Jurkus were charged in March with failing to provide the necessaries of life.
The men were charged in connection with an investigation launched after 24-year-old inmate Adam Kargus was found dead at the jail on November 1st. His cell mate, 28-year-old Anthony George is facing a second degree murder charge. George is accused of beating Kargus to death in the cell they shared on the night of October 31, 2013.
On Tuesday, lawyers for the two guards and a supervisor appeared in court on their behalf, and a date of July 8 was set for the next appearance.
Last month, the matter was put over to allow lawyers to sort through a “voluminous” evidence passed on from police through the Crown.
