UPDATE: Dairy Barn Burns Near 401
All lanes of Hwy. 401 through London opened just after 6am Thursday following an all-night closure because of a major structure fire.
A commercial barn on Old Victoria Rd. south of the Hwy. 401 burned, causing a major, smoky blaze that blew thick smoke across the lanes of the highway. Middlesex OPP Constable Laurie Houghton tells Blackburn News the closure was necessary for the safety of drivers and emergency crews attending the fire.
London Fire District Chief Kirk Loveland says a HAZMAT team joined dozens of firefighters on the scene. He says firefighters were able to prevent the flames from reaching chemicals stored at one end of the barn. Now he says, it’s mostly hay and wood that are still smouldering.
All lanes of Hwy. 401 between Highbury Ave. and Veterans Memorial Pkwy. were closed for about eight hours.
