Memorial Cup FanFest To OpenMay 15, 2014 2:00am
What promises to be a week of excitement officially begins Thursday, as the Mastercard Memorial Cup arrival ceremony is held in London.
The cup itself is already in London, but an elaborate ceremony marking its arrival in the city is set for the afternoon.
The cup will officially arrive by military helicopter at Wolseley Barracks at 1pm. This part of the ceremony won’t be open to the public because of security issues. But, the public is invited come to Victoria Park where the Cup will arrive by motorcade at 2:05pm for a brief ceremony, before the Budweiser Clydesdales and London’s 1st Hussars take it to the Fanfest area by the Covent Garden Market.
“Global Spectrum and our naming rights partner, Budweiser, are proud to bring the legendary Budweiser Clydesdales to the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup” says Brian Ohl, Global Spectrum’s regional vice president and the general manager of Budweiser Gardens. “This is something we have been working with Paul Walker and the Budweiser team on since the Knights were selected to host the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup a year ago. This appearance is special and took a lot of cooperation among the City, Budweiser, the Knights, Global Spectrum and the CHL; it was absolutely worth all the effort.”
Thursday’s events also include the official opening Gala at 5:30pm, which will feature guest speaker Brendan Shanahan, the former London Knight and current president of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The London Knights will play the first game of the tournament on Friday night, when they face the QMJHL champion Val-d’Or Foreurs.
