Two people have died following a two-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer on Hwy. 401 near Chatham.

The Ontario Provincial Police say around 3pm on Saturday, the tractor-trailer was travelling westbound on the highway near Mull Rd. when it crossed the centre median and struck an eastbound car.

Police say two occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the tractor-trailer is listed in stable condition in hospital. The names and ages of the victims have not been released by police.

The OPP closed Hwy. 401 to east and westbound traffic between Kent Bridge Rd. and Communication Rd. for several hours during the day while they conducted their investigation. Hwy. 401 westbound has since been reopened and the OPP have opened one lane for eastbound traffic.
