RCMP Arrest Nine In Contraband Tobacco Busts
The RCMP say they have arrested and charged nine people after an investigation into contraband tobacco.
At a news conference at the London detachment Friday afternoon, the Mounties announced they arrested the nine after learning some tobacco growers in the region were allegedly producing more tobacco than they were allowed and selling the excess through the black market.
Several raids were conducted over the past week, leading to the seizure of:
- $300,000 worth of raw leaf tobacco
- six trucks, one tractor, one car, one boat, one snowmobile, one motorcycle
- Over 60 kg of marijuana
- 950 marijuana plants
- two bricks of hashish
- small amounts of cocaine, ketamine, and MDMA
- $85,000 in cash
- 45 shotguns
The suspects face various charges under the Criminal Code, the Excise Act, and the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.
