Election Called For June 12

The voters of Ontario will go to the polls on June 12.

Premier Kathleen Wynne visited the Lieutenant Governor on Friday afternoon and asked David Onley to dissolve the Legislature and call an election. He agreed to do so.

The move came hours after NDP leader Andrea Horwath announced that her party would not support the provincial budget.

Speaking at a news conference in Toronto, Horwath repeatedly mentioned the gas plant scandal and her lack of confidence in the government’s ability to follow through on promises. ¬†Horwath says she agrees with some of the pledges the government has made, for example, higher wages for personal support workers. However she said she believes the Liberals are unable to deliver on those promises. She said the lack of a promised fiscal accountability officer is evidence that they don’t follow through.

She calls the $130-billion budget more of the same and says she believes the people of Ontario deserve better.
