Mayor Wants More Time To Save Lorne Ave PS
Mayor Joe Fontana is throwing what amounts to a Hail Mary pass to try to save Lorne Avenue Public School.
The mayor has asked the Thames Valley District School Board for a 30-day extension in the negotiating period regarding the sale of part of the school to the city.
“I believe we are very close to finding a workable solution but we need more time. This is when the TVDSB and the city need to be strong and demonstrate a full commitment to our public mandates of serving our citizens. We must proceed in a cooperative and progressive manner and leave no stone unturned,” Fontana says in a news release issued Wednesday morning.
The TVDSB set a deadline of April 30 to find a buyer or tenant for part of the Old East school, which would allow it to keep it open. If not, the school will close in June, 2015.
Fontana’s letter to the trustees urges them to consider leaving the door open so all parties may find a positive solution. He also asks for a meeting of all key participants within the coming week.
