Couple Charged In St. Thomas Taxi Theft

Two people have been charged after a St. Thomas taxi driver was forced to chase down his own cab on foot, during a fare gone-wrong.

The cabbie picked up a man and woman at a downtown bar just before 2:30am Sunday, but when he dropped them off at their destination in a north-end neighbourhood, they tried to take off without paying. The cab driver got out of his vehicle to stop them and that’s when the man circled back, hopping into the unlocked and running taxi, speeding away.

Police were called and after a quick search found the cab, undamaged, and a female suspect. A male suspect was arrested later at his residence.

A 24-year-old woman is charged with transportation fraud and public intoxication, while a 24-year-old man is charged with transportation fraud and motor vehicle theft. The couple will appear before the courts to answer to the charges at a later date.
