Chatham Maroons name co-captains, bump up Sunday start time

The Chatham Maroons have settled on their new leadership group ahead of the upcoming GOJHL season.

The Maroons will feature two co-captains this year with Lucas Fancy and Cameron Welch both set to share the "C".

"Both players set the standard for our team with how hard they work every day," said Maroons Head Coach and GM Tyler Roeszler in a statement. "They are both local Chatham-Kent players who are veterans in our league and will do a great job leading our team."

Fancy and Welch, who are both from Charing Cross, were teammates on the Chatham-Kent Cyclones U15 and U16 'AAA'. They have both worn a Maroons uniform as well, but never at the same time.

Fancy played 19 regular-season games for Chatham in the 2019-20 season after being acquired from Leamington, putting up seven goals and six assists during that stretch. He added four more goals and an assist in seven playoff games.

Welch played eight regular-season games for the Maroons in 2017-18 and another 10 games for the team in 2018-19 before he was traded to Komoka.

Fellow Maroons veterans Craig Spence and Cameron Symons will serve as assistant captains. Both of them have played two seasons with the team.

The Maroons didn't take the ice at all for the 2020-2021 season because it was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns and public health restrictions.

When the team heads back to Chatham Memorial Arena, they'll be starting their home games at a new time as well.

In a release, team officials said they are moving their home game start times to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays, citing "plenty of feedback from our current fans, community members and city councillors that it would be great to have afternoon games on Sundays."

The team notes that it does not have guidance on how many fans will be allowed in the arena yet, but they will be keeping fans up to date on attendance protocols moving forward.

The team is currently planning to hold pre-season exhibition home games on Sunday, September 12, and Sunday, September 19 -- both of those games will start at 3:30 p.m.

The first regular-season home game is scheduled for September 26 at 3:30 p.m. with the team noting that the "dates are subject to change based on COVID regulations at that time."
