Local athletes medal at U Sports competitions

Chatham-Kent was well-represented at a pair of national sporting competitions over the weekend.

Chatham's James Muharrem -- who competes with the Guelph Gryphons -- finished fourth in the men's 60-metre hurdles on Saturday at the U Sports track and field championships in Edmonton.

Muharrem finished the race with a personal best time of 8.17 seconds. He also took home a gold medal as part of the Gryphons' men's team, which finished first overall in the team standings.

Also at the competition, Chatham's Anthony Atkinson with the Windsor Lancers team finished fourth in the men's weight throw with his furthest toss of the season at 17.04 metres. Atkinson finished ninth in the men's shot put at 14.43 metres.

Two more CK runners -- Chatham's Ally Oulds (Western Mustangs) and Wheatley's Kiera Jackson (Windsor Lancers) both earned seventh-place finishes with their respective relay teams.

Meanwhile, Chatham's Marley Blommers came away from the U Sports men's basketball championship in Ottawa on Sunday with a silver medal.

Blommers played five minutes in the final, registering one block for the Number-2 seeded Dalhousie Tigers in a close 74-65 loss to the top-ranked Carleton Ravens.
