Jr. hockey wrap-up - November 24, 2018

A huge third period by the Dresden Kings was more than enough for a 7-2 win over the Blenheim Blades Saturday at Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Dresden extended its lead over the Essex 73s by three points in the PJHL Stobbs Division, with 38 points. Blenheim is in seventh place with 18 points.

Cameron Symons's goal at 6:58 in the opening period put the Blades up first. Nolan Vandenboorn tied the game up for Dresden less than a minute later. Ryan Malott scored later in the period for a 2-1 Blenheim lead after the first frame.

The Kings tied the game again with the lone goal of the middle stanza, from Brendan Ritchie at 12:23.

Dresden blew the game open with five consecutive goals, scored in order by Ritchie, Derek Shaw, Kenny Chisholm, Eric Carter and Noah Fox.

Brett Brochu stopped 27 out of 29 shots in goal for the Kings. Chris DeWulf had 35 saves in net for Blenheim.

The Blades travel to Amherstburg Sunday night, while Dresden heads to Wheatley Wednesday.

Cole Butler scored the winner in overtime as the Wheatley Omstead Sharks beat the Petrolia Flyers 5-4 on the road.

Wheatley has 23 points in the Stobbs Division in sixth place. Petrolia is eighth with 13 points, including the one earned in the overtime loss.

The Sharks bit first just before the nine-minute mark of the opening frame with Lucas Bersuk's goal.

Petrolia took the lead by scoring back to back in the second period. Zach VanEyk got the Flyers on the board with a power play goal, then Josh Jamieson provided the go-ahead score. Wheatley knotted the game at 2-2 when Braedon Caetano lit the lamp.

The Flyers tied it up at 3:03 in the third period, but Mason Gow put Wheatley ahead again on the power play just 27 seconds later. Petrolia regained the lead on a power play goal from Eric Marsh, then the Sharks forced overtime thanks to a score from Mitch Kreiger. Butler scored the winner on the power play at 2:52 in the extra frame.

Catalin Morin had 33 saves in the win for Wheatley. Chaska Thiel stopped 37 shots in the loss for the Flyers.

Petrolia hosts Lakeshore in their next game, on Thursday night.

The Komoka Kings broke things open with a big second period in their 4-2 home win over the St. Marys Lincolns.

Komoka has 18 points in the GOJHL Western Conference standings, good for seventh place. The Lincolns are last with 15.

The Lincolns scored two goals in the first period. Mason Goldie put the first one in at 4:10, and Brett Whitehead followed suit later in the frame.

The Kings scored a trio in the middle stanza to take a 3-2 lead at the second intermission. Jacob Rochford put Komoka on the board with a power play goal at 11:54. Blake McConnell-Barker scored the equalizer three-and-a-half minutes later, then Joel Mazzilli's power play goal before the end of the period gave the Kings the lead.

Cameron Welch provided insurance for Komoka with the only goal scored in the final period.

Nathan Young took the win between the Kings' pipes, notching 19 saves. Justin Richer had 26 stops for St. Marys.

The Kings are next in action Thursday night when they visit Leamington. St. Marys hosts those same Flyers on Friday.
