Sports Briefs - October 12, 2016

The Chicago Cubs advanced to the National League Championship Series in thrilling fashion. The Cubs scored four times in the ninth inning to get by the Giants 6-5 and clinch the series in San Francisco.

In other playoff action -- the LA Dodgers are still alive in their NL division series. The Dodgers edged the Nationals 6-5 to tie the series up at 2-games-a-piece. The 5th and deciding game goes tomorrow in Washington.

In other baseball news -- an average of 4.73-million viewers watched Sunday's Game 3 of the ALDS between the Blue Jays and Rangers on Sportsnet.

Meanwhile -- Marco Estrada will get the ball for Toronto in the opener of the A-L-C-S on Friday in Cleveland.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has told reporters that he's taking things on a "day by day" basis as he recovers from a concussion and is not concerned about his long-term health.

In Chatham-Kent Cougars minor football action, six games took place on Monday.

Tyke Division

The Formosa Pro Shop McGregor team matched up against the Enviro Clean Car and Dog Wash squad. Logan Sharpe rushed for 230 yards and one TD for Formosa while Drew Heidt had four tackles, Royce Brooks registered six tackles, and Reed Larson picked up two tackles and two sacks. Sawyer Emmott had two TDs for Enviro Clean.

The TVCogeco Pines team took on Evans Wholesale Wallaceburg. Jacob Pretty was dominant on both sides of the ball scoring two TDs and registering 11 tackles for TVCogeco. Brett Apers and Ian Apers answered back, with Brett scoring three TDs while Ian had one of his own.

Peewee Division

The Enviro Clean Car and Dog Wash McGregor team got shut out by Peach Physiotherapy & Wellness Centre CKSS 14-0. Zach Clarke and JayC Morlog were standouts on defense for Enviro Clean while Jack Crow had a 10 yrd TD run and Alex Jones had a TD catch for Peach Physio.

The TVCogeco Pines team beat Stanley Insurance Wallaceburg 31-0. Andrew Pearson, Cohen Gillett, and Cole Pereira all scored touchdowns for TVCogeco.

Bantam Division

The Swain Bros McGregor team tripled Campbell Toyota CKSS 36-12. Drew Barko ran for two TDs while Koren Stewart ran for one TD for Swain Bros. Meantime, Tyler Shumanski scored two TDs for Campbell Toyota --  one was a 75-yard punt return for a score.

The Bluewater Pools Pines team blanked Parks Blueberries Wallaceburg 43-0. Bluewater Pools' Braxton Anderson threw his first touchdown of the year to Evan Starr in the game. Evan Cole and Jordan Alderdice each had five tackles for Parks Blueberries.
