Konecny Leads Sting Over Petes 6-5

Travis Konecny scored twice and added a pair of assists as the Sarnia Sting (24-13-5-1) edged the visiting Peterborough Petes (22-19-2-4) 6-5 in OHL hockey action Saturday night.

Brandon Lindberg opened the scoring for the Sting with just under two minutes to go in the first period on a nice pass from Patrick White. Konecny put the Sting ahead 2-0 on a two on one goal just 42 seconds into the second frame.

The Petes had a goal called back about a minute later, however, Hunter Garlent scored shortly after to make it a 2-1 game.

Josh Jacobs scored on a wrist shot from the right point, and Jordan Kyrou potted a rebound goal to pull the Sting ahead 4-1 midway through the second period.

The Petes were able to pull back to within a goal on markers from Jordan Ang and Matthew Timms. Timms' goal came on the powerplay with just 42 seconds remaining in the second period.

Travis Konecny scored his second of the game and seventh as a member of the Sting 3:04 into the third period on the powerplay to put Sarnia up 5-3. The goal came on a bad angle shot from the goal line.

Five minutes later, Petes defenceman Brandon Prophet scored his third of the season to make it a 5-4 game.

Sam Studnicka scored the insurance goal for the Sting on the powerplay and Sarnia was able to hang on for a 6-5 victory. Sting goalie Justin Fazio made 19 saves on 24 shots while Petes netminder Dylan Wells stopped 28 of 34 Sting shots.

The Sting now have 54 points on the season, and are seven back of the Windsor Spitfires with two games in hand.

The game was played before a crowd of 3,061 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
