Attempted bike theft leads to arrest, drug charges

A 28-year-old Chatham man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to steal a bicycle that was propped up outside of a business in downtown Chatham Sunday morning.

Chatham-Kent police said they tracked the man down after getting a call about the attempted theft on Third Street at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers were able to identify the suspect after reviewing some surveillance footage and arrested him while he was crossing the Fifth Street Bridge about half an hour after the call came in.

Police said the man allegedly resisted arrest, adding that when they found him, he also allegedly had some methamphetamine in his pocket.

He was charged with theft, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance.

The accused was taken to police headquarters and later released with conditions.

Sarnia woman found on sidewalk

A 37-year-old Sarnia woman spent some time in police custody after she was allegedly found on the sidewalk along Dora Drive in Wallaceburg Sunday afternoon.

Police said when they found the woman, shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday, she was allegedly intoxicated and unable to care for herself.

She was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there until she sobered up.

Impaired driver stopped in Chatham

A 36-year-old Chatham woman is facing an impaired driving charge after police were called to investigate a traffic complaint on Park Avenue West in Chatham.

Officers said that was shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.

After police pulled the vehicle over, they suspected the woman behind the wheel was driving while impaired, so she was taken to police headquarters for a breath test.

She was later charged with having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit and was released to the care of a family member with conditions and a future court date.
