Local artists invited to help make CK a little prettier

If you consider yourself to have an artistic hand, you could have the opportunity to see your work on display around town.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is partnering with Entegrus and Impact Graphics for a pilot project to "Paint the Town" in an effort to promote public art and beautify the community.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said the program will give CK-based artists the chance to showcase their talents by submitting designs that will then be turned into wraps for things such as traffic signal and electrical boxes. Canniff said these boxes are often overlooked or considered an eyesore. The Paint the Town project looks to turn these objects into vibrant works of art, showcasing Chatham's creativity and identity.

"Public art plays a crucial role in building vibrant, welcoming communities. It has the power to inspire, educate, and bring people together, creating a sense of identity and pride in our community," said Canniff. "By investing in public art, we are investing in our community's cultural legacy and providing opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents. I believe public art is not just a luxury but a necessity in creating a thriving, dynamic community."

In the coming weeks, the municipality said there will be a call for local artists to submit their designs.

"Entegrus is proud to support the municipality and local artists on the ‘Paint the Town’ initiative,” said Entegrus President and CEO Jim Hogan. "We are happy to assist in showcasing the artists in our community."

Funding for the project is from the Hydro One Community Benefit program, which is designated for recreational and art projects.

In addition to the project, CK is also launching a contest. The individual who can name the location of all six traffic and electrical boxes, one per ward, will win a gift certificate from Pizazz Florals and Balloons. The list of locations must be emailed to ckpartnership@chatham-kent.ca.
