CK Expo to take over Convention Centre

Chatham-Kent's annual pop culture show is coming to the John D. Bradley Convention Centre this Saturday, April 29.

This is the 9th year for CK Expo, which is Chatham-Kent's Comicon.

"Time to get geeky and nerdy and dress up and come see all the costumes and celebrities and fun stuff," said Rob Bellamy, one of the organizers.

There will be a number of special guests in attendance, and Bellamy said one of the highlights this year is some local celebrities.

"On Discovery+ there's a TV show called 'We Bought a Funeral Home.' It's about a family from Detroit that bought the Dresden funeral home and are remaking it into a home, and they are hilarious," he said. "They are going to be there this year."

If you're a Star Trek fan you don't want to miss the panel they have planned.

"We have three people coming from 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,'" said Bellamy. "Teddy Kellog, who was an actor on it, Frank Meschkuleit, who was a puppeteer on it, and Chris Bridges who does all the makeup effects, are going to be there. We have questions for them, but we're always asking for people in the audience to talk because that's what we want them to be a part of it, and to learn what they want to learn."

With over 75 vendors, Bellamy said there is something for everyone, even people who think they might not be into an event like this.

"You're surprised by how many people would actually enjoy it, they just don't know. Because there is just so much nostalgia and pop culture references, just things that you watched as a kid, or things that you watch on TV now, would be there," he said.

Tickets are $15, but a portion of the proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters Chatham-Kent.

"They've been our partners since 2015, and it's a great mash-up. We have a charity auction online right now, and all those proceeds go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters, and there's some cool stuff in the auction," Bellamy said.

The online auction runs until Saturday at 3 p.m. at www.32auctions.com/ckexpo.
