Police tase chain-whipping man

A 48-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly charged at some security guards in Chatham and whipped a large chain at a pylon.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called in for that just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Grand Avenue West in Chatham.

Police said security saw the man whipping the pylon, so they approached him, but he "became confrontational" and allegedly charged at the security guards while holding a large steel pipe.

Officers found the man on Emma Street and said he was still acting aggressively while holding the pipe "in a threatening manner."

Police spoke to the man and eventually used a taser to disarm him before taking him into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

He was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Man arrested for trespassing on railway property

A 26-year-old Chatham-Kent man is facing a handful of charges after he was allegedly caught trespassing on railway property and then tried to resist arrest.

Chatham-Kent police said they arrested the man in the area of Murray Street in Chatham after they were called to help out the Canadian Pacific Railway Police.

Police said the man was "uncooperative" and resisted arrest, but they were eventually able to take him into custody.

Officers said they learned the man was also wanted on an outstanding warrant and had previously been ordered to stay off of CP property.

The accused was charged with two counts of resisting arrest along with one count each of failing to comply with a court order and trespassing on railway property.

He was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Woman arrested for alleged shoplifting

A 43-year-old Chatham-Kent woman is facing a pair of charges after she allegedly tried to steal two bags worth of merchandise from a store on Queen Street in Chatham.

Police said they were called in just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and learned the woman had tried to leave the business without paying for the items.

She was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property, then released with a future court date.
