West Lorne vying for top spot in Kraft Hockeyville contest

A tiny community just off Highway 401 is the last Ontario competitor left standing in the annual Kraft Hockeyville contest.

The 55-year-old West Lorne Arena is seen by many as the hub of the community, but it is also in need of upgrades.

Picture squeezing 80 to 100 hockey players into four dressing rooms on a busy weekend during the regular hockey season.

"It's not ideal," said Rob Tait, director of coaching for the West Lorne Minor Hockey Association. "We're packed in there like sardines."

Tait said the arena is in need of a new front entrance with more accessible larger doors, new dressing rooms to accommodate more players, and an expanded warm room for families and fans.

"The front entrance opens right into the arena so there are a lot of issues with ice conditions," said Tait. "Essentially, it lets in the hot air when we get into this time of the year. Our arena can't be open year-round."

West Lorne is the last Ontario community standing competing in the national contest. The winning community gets $250,000 for renovations and a chance to host an NHL preseason game.

"It would mean the world to us," said Tait. "We're the smallest, we're the underdogs but we like that. We're used to that."

Lucan won the annual contest in 2018, and West Lorne is hoping to bring the title back to southwestern Ontario once again.

Being in the Top 4 has the community buzzing, according to Tait.

"It's just been amazing how it has brought the community together," said Tait. "It's been absolutely amazing, the response from the community."

West Lorne is up against communities in Quebec, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Voting to crown this year's grand prize winner opens on March 31 at 9 a.m.
