Resident feedback wanted on backyard chickens

Chatham-Kent residents are being encouraged to share their feedback when it comes to allowing backyard chickens in both rural and urban residential areas of the municipality.

The topic of permitting backyard chickens in residential areas once again went up for debate to Chatham-Kent council in early February. During the meeting, councillors unanimously approved to further study and get feedback on the issue.

The current bylaw prohibits the raising of chickens on any parcel of land that is not zoned agricultural.

Feburary's motion was brought forward by Blenheim Councillor Anthony Ceccacci, who said at the time that there has been renewed interest in the community to have chickens in both urban and rural residential areas.

At council's direction, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent has now launched a Community Engagement survey through Let’s Talk CK.

"This survey is anonymous and you will not be required to give your name or register to take the survey," municipal officials said through a media release. "The summary results of the survey will be provided in a report to Council in May along with recommendations."

The survey will be available until April 11 and can be found by clicking here.
