Local residents honoured at council for life-saving efforts in CK

Several Chatham-Kent citizens and emergency responders have been recognized for their life-saving efforts during an automobile crash on McNaughton Line in May of 2022.

According to a previously released report from police, a vehicle left the roadway, rolled several times and ejected both occupants.

Police said the vehicle also caught on fire as it came to a stop.

A 19-year-old man died as a result of the crash and a 19-year-old woman was seriously hurt.

The woman who survived the collision, Kaitlin Remsik, was at Monday night's Chatham-Keent council meeting to thank those who helped out.

In a message she wrote that was read by her mother, Remsik said she feels that she wouldn’t be alive today without the actions of those who helped.

Jeremy Van Kesteren, who lived near the crash scene, heard the crash and saw a vehicle on fire down the road from his home. He called 911, relayed information to emergency communications personnel, and stayed with the crash victims to comfort them until first responders could arrive.

Van Kesteren along with local firefighters and paramedics were honoured at Monday night’s council meeting with a special citation.

Remsik said she is grateful for everything Van Kesteren did on the day of the crash.
