UPDATE: Council approves all-way stop for busy Tilbury intersection

A busy intersection on the border of Tilbury and Essex County will look a little different in the near future.

On Monday, the municipal council unanimously voted to install an all-way stop at the intersection of Middle Line and Wheatley Road.

The majority of the intersection is located on Chatham-Kent highway lands, but a portion immediately to the west is in Essex County.

"Implementing an all-way stop at the intersection will require sign and pavement marking work on the highway within Essex County," read a municipal report going to council Monday. "Consultation and approval from the neighbouring municipality is recommended."

In August, council directed staff to conduct a traffic study at the intersection which outlined the need for a traffic signal and left turn lanes.

The intersection is currently controlled with flashing beacons installed on the northbound and southbound stop signs.

"Development around the intersection consists of commercial properties on the northeast, northwest, and southwest corners," the report read. "The southeast corner is farmland. Residential sub-divisions are currently under development along the west side of Queen Street South, north of the intersection."

The estimated cost to upgrade the intersection of Middle Line and Wheatley Road to an all-way stop is $10,000, which includes the signs, pavement markings, and traffic signal work.

Once the project is approved by the County of Essex, a by-law amendment for the new all-way stop will be submitted for Council approval.
