Construction continues on Murray Street Bridge

A busy bridge in Wallaceburg will be closed again as rehabilitation work continues on the Murray Street Bridge.

Starting on Wednesday, March 8, the bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic. According to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, the closure will be in place until May 1, 2023.

During this time, one sidewalk will remain open for pedestrian traffic.

The following two detours will be in place to direct traffic around the site:

Murray Street - McNaughton Avenue - Wellington Street - Margaret Avenue.

Murray Street - Queen Street - Gillard Street - McNaughton Avenue - James Street - Margaret Avenue - Wellington Street

"Chatham-Kent is committed to working with Landform Civil Infrastructures Ltd. to maintain a safe and orderly worksite," municipal officials said through a media release. "All efforts will be made to reduce the impact on the surrounding areas.  Construction sites have many potential hazards and extreme caution should be taken by adhering to the safety requirements and to stay outside of the construction zones."

For the remainder of the rehabilitation, the Murray Street Bridge will not be operable for larger boats, however, smaller boats that do not require to bridge to be opened will be accommodated. The bridge will be operational by May 15, coinciding with the beginning of the navigation season.

Chatham-Kent council previously approved the $1.9 million contract to repair the bridge after site inspections identified several conditional and operational issues that needed to be addressed in order to extend the bridge’s life expectancy and maintain public safety.

The project includes removing and replacing the specialized coating on the bridge deck and sidewalk, concrete repairs, repairing mechanical issues, as well as replacing the bridge’s hardware and software.
