Person who notified officials of Wheatley gas leak made the right call

Enbridge officials are giving a shoutout to someone in Wheatley who called emergency crews after smelling some gas in the downtown area earlier this week.

Fire crews and employees with HSE Integrated were called to the scene in the area of Talbot Street and Erie Street Sunday night after someone reported smelling some gas there.

Investigators didn't get any readings in the area, though, so they checked the gas meters in the downtown core and called in Enbridge after learning the issue was at a gas meter and not the site of the explosion in 2021.

Crews were able to repair the gas meter without any issues, but officials said the person who notified emergency crews about the leak still made the right call.

“We commend the community for taking the right steps to call when a gas odour is detected, keeping safety top of mind," said Windsor-Essex/Chatham-Kent Operations Manager, Brian Chauvin. "Free emergency response is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling our emergency number at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe distance away from the leak – never assume someone else has called."
