Man ditches disguise after robbery in Chatham

Some DNA evidence collected from a Chatham-Kent man's carelessly discarded disguise has led to his downfall.

Chatham-Kent police said they arrested the 29-year-old man on Sunday in connection with a robbery at a business on King Street West that took place on October 20, 2022.

Police said they learned that someone had walked into the store and demanded money.

Officers said after the suspect got some cash, he left the store and then threw away some of his clothing -- including a scarf, a wig, and some gloves.

Investigators were able to use surveillance footage to track the man's path and that is also what led them to the discarded items, which were seized for forensic examination.

Police said they were notified on January 18 that the samples they provided to the Centre of Forensic Sciences were able to generate a DNA profile that matched a local man.

Officers found him on January 29 and arrested him.

He was charged with robbery and was set to be held pending a bail hearing.
