How to fight the 'winter blues'

Monday, January 16 marks Blue Monday, a day that many believe to be the most depressing day of the year.

That's because of a combination of factors, including the weather, holiday debt, and failed New Year's resolutions.

"Our daylight is at a premium, especially where we live," said Taylor Spinnato, a Mental Health Promotion Specialist with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Lambton-Kent. "We're leaving in the morning when it's dark, were coming home when it's dark, it can be a bit depressing. The nights are long, it's cold, we're not really getting outside as much. So for sure, it can have a real impact on our mental health."

Spinnato said the first step is being aware of your mental health.

"If we're feeling a big down, especially during this time, understanding is it starting to really interfere with our daily activities? Are we starting to really feel this way several days in a row? Because what happens is it starts to impact your personality, you're not able to cope with everyday life."

She has some practical tips for making lifestyle changes that can help beat the "winter blues."

"Getting proper sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, being physically active, maybe it's setting up a budget to manage your spending habits," said Taylor. "These are all really practical ways, and really achievable goals that can make you feel a little but more balanced."

But Taylor adds that if those changes are not enough, talk to a friend or family member, or reach out to the CMHA through their website at https://lambtonkent.cmha.ca/.

And if you notice someone in your life might be experiencing the "winter blues," Spinnato recommends just starting a conversation with them.

"Don't be afraid to just say, 'Hey, I've noticed that you're just not yourself and I'm worried, and I'm here to talk if you need that.' So, just really being that supportive person and not being afraid to talk about our mental health," said Spinnato.
