Blenheim hockey player looks for gold in Sweden

A hockey player from Blenheim is going to Sweden to represent Canada at the Under-18 Women's World Championship next month.

Abby Stonehouse will be one of 23 players representing the Maple Leaf at the tournament beginning January 8, 2023. The 16-year-old forward is part of the roster unveiled by Hockey Canada on Friday.

“After a competitive camp this summer, we are excited with the group we have put together for the upcoming world championship,” said Director of Hockey Operations Gina Kingsbury. “Our coaching staff and scouts have done a tremendous job at identifying the next group of elite athletes who will contribute to our women’s program. The team is motivated and excited for the opportunity to defend gold in Sweden.”

The Canadian girls are searching for back-to-back gold medals.

Canada is in Group A at the Championship with Finland, Sweden and the United States. The Canadians open the tournament against Finland on January 8, 2023 before playing Sweden the next day and the United States on January 11, 2023. All three preliminary round games start at 2 p.m. local time.

Stonehouse recently played for the London Devilettes in the Ontario Women’s Hockey League.
