Young performers take the stage this weekend for Disney's Frozen Jr

A popular Disney musical is set to take the stage in Chatham this weekend, put on by local youth.

The stage at the Kiwanis Theatre will be a busy spot this weekend with Disney's Frozen Jr., which opens Friday night.

"It's about an hour-long adaptation of Disney's broadway musical that is based on the movie Frozen," said Artistic Director Rachel Schwarz. "So it is Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff - all of the characters that kids know and love."

The cast includes 60 youth performers from the ages of five to 18.

“We are so thrilled to finally offer our students the opportunity to present a fully-staged musical theatre production," said Schwarz. "Our last full-scale musical was in June of 2019, and even though the very worst of the last couple of years, these amazing, dedicated students kept learning, working, and growing."

Residents can join Anna and Elsa as they embark on an epic, ice-filled journey on Friday, December 2 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, December 3 at 1 p.m. or 6 p.m.

"Adapted for young performers, this musical includes favourite Frozen songs such as 'Love Is an Open Door,' 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman?' and 'Let It Go' as well as wonderful new songs from the Broadway production," said Schwarz.

This will be the first full-scale musical since the COVID-19 pandemic. While the arts community was hit hard, Schwarz said the students didn't stop working on their acting and singing skills.

"Now the community has a chance to support them on their journey," said Schwarz. "Preparing for this was one thing but to have an amazing audience of people who are their to support you is a great feeling. I am looking forward to the kids having that this weekend."

Tickets for the show are $20.
