Chatham man identified as victim after fatal Hwy. 40 crash

A 41-year-old Chatham man has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash on Highway 40 just north of Chatham in September.

Ontario Provincial Police said Matthew Hewer died after the crash, adding that the investigation into the "fail-to-remain collision" is ongoing.

OPP are still hoping to speak with anyone who may have seen a northbound white hatchback passenger vehicle or an individual walking in the area of Pine Line and Eberts Line between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on September 19, 2022.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

An obituary posted for Matthew Hewer says "he will be deeply missed by all those who loved him."

Hewer is also remembered as extremely active in sports in his youth, playing in many levels of hockey with Chatham Minor Hockey House League, Travel and Select teams.

He worked as an educational assistant with youth and children and enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday November 26, 2022 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the KBD Club in Chatham.
