UCC Students support and learn about Indigenous culture

A group of students from Ursuline College in Chatham (UCC) was among dozens that showed up at an event on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to learn more about reconciliation.

The students are part of an Indigenous leadership group at UCC that is available to all students who want to learn more about and support Indigenous culture.

The event took place at Ska:na Family Learning Centre in Chatham on Friday.

Dakota Sands said she wants to learn more about Indigenous culture and why and how the residential school abuses happened so she can relay the facts to others who may not know.

"I hope to learn a lot more about everything. I only know very few things like most people know and I want to learn deeper knowledge and more about everything honestly," said Dakota.

Finn Reeb said he wanted to show his support for Indigenous culture and the children who suffered in the residential schools.

"I want to learn more about Indigenous communities and I really like their dances because their fun, I want to learn more about that," Finn said.

Kyra Riddell also showed up to support Indigenous people and thinks it's important to learn the facts and spread the word about what happened at residential schools.

"Show support and hopefully help raise awareness for the communities so it can get better and more supported. I don't really know much except that Indigenous people weren't really treated right," said Kyra.

Leela McLaughlin and Megan Card also showed up to remember the children who died at residential schools, to support survivors who now live with the trauma, and to learn more about their heritage and culture.

An emotional healing walk and gathering took place in Wallaceburg on Thursday to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
