No cause for concern after odour investigation in Wheatley

Downtown Wheatley has been given the all-clear following an odour investigation near the site of last summer's explosion.

On Wednesday afternoon, Chatham-Kent firefighters were called to Talbot Road East in Wheatley, just 350 metres away from where a large explosion took place in August 2021.

According to Chatham-Kent Fire Assistant Chief Ken Labonte, crews used gas detection devices to monitor the air and no gas was detected.

“They did the right thing. Smelled gas, evacuated and called 911,” explained Labonte. “None of the gas detectors went off and there is nothing to indicate that wells are leaking or to raise concerns.”

Chatham-Kent fire will continue to monitor the area.

Meanwhile, final work on the APEC 1 well one will continue on Thursday at the site of the explosion on Erie Street North.

According to officials with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, contractors will complete cutting the well and capping it. Testing will continue with clean-up and restoration of the work area later this week.

As usual, residents are reminded that if at any time they detect the smell of gas, to immediately call 911.
