First annual charity ride gives boost to Chatham Goodfellows

Chatham Goodfellows is on the receiving end of a nearly $2,700 donation from a local group of motorcycle riders.

The Chatham-Kent HOG's first annual toy ride kicked off the No Child Without A Christmas campaign by donating $2,175 and about $500 in new toys.

"The turnout was a little overwhelming for us," said Chatham-Kent HOG Assistant Director Bill Hudson. "We never expected what we got. As a group, we were hoping to have 20 to 35 bikes show up."

Around 70 bikes rolled into Chatham-Kent for the fundraising event on Saturday.

"Our chapter was absolutely flabbergasted by the turnout," said Hudson. "We were amazed."

In order for bikers to ride the route, a donation of $20 or a new toy was needed.

The event started at the Tim Hortons on Bloomfield Road in Chatham before riders took off for a ride through the community, ending at Sons of Kent.

Hudson said the local HOG group has already begun planning next year's ride after Saturday's turnout.

While a date has not been set for next year's event Hudson said it is something the group is going to continue doing.
