UPDATE: Two youths sentenced in 2021 Chatham shooting

Two of the five accused of attempted murder in Chatham last year have both pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated assault and have been sentenced.

The shooting took place on Harvey Street in Chatham on January 26, 2021.

The 18-year-old and 19-year-old men cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because they were both minors at the time of the targeted shooting.

They were both sentenced to time already served and 15 months and 21 months of probation respectively. The 19-year-old from the Kitchener-Cambridge area spent three months in jail and been under house arrest since March of 2021. The 18-year-old has spent almost 16 months behind bars.

Both have been banned from owning or possessing weapons for two years, they're to have no contact with the other four accused, the victims or their family, are to attend counselling, and are to provide a DNA sample.

The defence lawyer for the 19-year-old told the court that he didn't know there would be a gun involved when he set out with the others to settle a score.

The victims' mother told the court that the family is still fearful of retaliation. She also said the 18-year-old was taken in when he didn't have anybody else to turn to during a turbulent time and was treated like a son. The victims have also said they have trust issues because of the shooting.

The 18-year-old will live with his aunt and uncle in Orillia upon his release.

A publication ban prevents more information and evidence from being made public because three other suspects are still going through the court and to protect the identity of the victims.

Terry St. Hill, 21, Rylie Dejonge-Vandusen, 20, of London and Brianna Gardiner, 19, of Cambridge will return to court on September 26, 2022.
