Nomination period closes for CK municipal election

Chatham-Kent residents now have a better idea of who will be vying for their vote during the upcoming municipal election.

After a three-and-a-half-month period, the deadline for nominations to be submitted was Friday at 2 p.m.

Three of the wards in Chatham-Kent are guaranteed to have at least one new face representing them, with a trio of incumbents not seeking reelection.

Current Ward 1 Councillor Mark Authier is not running again. However, his fellow Ward 1 Councillor Melissa Harrigan will be seeking a second term and is one of four people who will be on the ballot for Ward 1.

Current Ward 4 Councillor Joe Faas, who was first elected to Dresden council in 1976, is not running again either. Both Authier and Faas secured the most number of votes in their respective wards during the 2018 election.

Another longtime current member of council, Ward 6 councillor Doug Sulman has also chosen not to seek reelection. Sulman has served on local council for four decades.

Elsewhere, in Wallaceburg, residents won't be seeing much of a shakeup. Ward 5 incumbents Aaron Hall and Carmen McGregor are the only two individuals who submitted their candidacy for the ward.

Only three individuals put their names in for the role of Mayor of Chatham-Kent. Current Mayor Darrin Canniff will be seeking reelection. He'll be up against newcomers Andy Fisher and William Pickard.

Meanwhile, a mayoral hopeful during the 2018 municipal election will be trying her hand at municipal politics again. Allyson Storey, who placed second behind Canniff in 2018's municipal election, is running for Ward 6 to represent the community of Chatham.

Storey is one of 16 people running for a councillor seat in Ward 6, which has 6 seats to fill, the highest number of all the wards.

Election day is on October 24 and the new term of council commences on November 15.
