Big Brothers-Big Sisters of CK need help empowering youth

The Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent could use some more help mentoring young people in the community.

Development and Program Coordinator Holly Larivee said the organization mentors about 400 youth across the municipality, but only have roughly 60 matches currently.

Larivee said the group is always looking for Big Brothers and Big Sisters along with volunteers because there's always a waiting list for programming.

"We have our traditional one to one mentoring where our Big Brothers and Big Sisters spend two to three hours a week with littles in our community and then we have our in-school programming where the mentors spend one hour a week with the youth," said Larivee.

Larivee said mental health is a big issue with youth right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a Big Brother or a Big Sister would go a long way to help develop them.

"You never know necessarily if you don't have the time. We have a lot of empty nesters that take on littles. You don't necessarily need experience, you just need to be a good role model and have something to offer the youth that need developmental relationship," Larivee said.

Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent also made someone very happy on Thursday when they held a fundraising event called The Big Golf Ball Drop at Links of Kent Golf Club in Chatham.

Jane M. had the closest ball to the pin and won $3,000 after 3,000 golf balls hoisted up in a crane were dropped to the ground. You can find a video of the event by clicking here.

All of the proceeds from this fundraiser will stay in Chatham-Kent to help support Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent.
